Why I Deleted My Google Business Page

Updated: August 13, 2025

For years, I held onto my Google Business page because I’ve felt Google loves Google and it was essential for SEO. To be fair, it does serve a powerful purpose, especially for local businesses.

But I’m not local.

I’m based in a small suburb, yes, but I offer services to clients across the country. Still, every time I checked Google Search Console, my top-ranking terms were tied to my local town. Things like “web design in Rio Rancho” or “digital marketing near me.” These keywords made it seem like I was a neighborhood freelancer, not an agency with national reach.

So I deleted my Google Business page.

Now I’m rebuilding with a strategy that better aligns with how I actually work: through national referrals, niche expertise, and long-term partnerships. If you’re in the same position, working nationally but stuck in the local box, I hear you.

Why Google Was Sending Me the Wrong Leads

The Google Business profile is powerful for physical businesses: cafés, plumbers, mechanics, local consultants. But in my case, it was like wearing the wrong name tag at a networking event.

When people found me, they assumed I was limited to my suburb or metro area. That meant:

  • Less credibility with national clients:  Larger organizations often expect to see a broader presence or portfolio. Appearing as a small local firm raised doubts about whether we could handle national-scale work.
  • Getting filtered out in national searches: Because Google prioritized local intent, we were often excluded entirely from national keyword results, even when we were the right fit, just because of our geographic listing.

Deleting the profile was a leap, but it was necessary. Without the anchor of a Google map pin, I had a clean slate to refocus my SEO and client acquisition efforts.

What I’ll Monitor After Deleting My Google Business Page

After removing your listing, your local 3-pack rankings and map visibility will disappear, but that’s not the whole story. You need to track what really matters to your business.

Here’s what I’m now monitoring:

  1. Google Search Console
    • Impressions and clicks for non-location keywords.
    • Which pages are growing in visibility after the GMB removal.
    • Filtering out terms that are tied to my city.
  2. Google Analytics
    • Checking where visitors are coming from geographically.
    • Added conversion tracking tied to key actions like contact forms or quote requests.
    • Tracking top landing pages, are they aligned with a national service offerings?
  3. Referral Traffic
    • I get most of my leads through referrals, so I now monitor traffic sources closely.
    • Check if any of your client sites are sending you traffic.
    • UTM tag links shared via email or LinkedIn so you can attribute referrals properly.

What SEO to Focus on Instead

Since ditching local SEO, I’ve pivoted toward strategies that grow visibility across the country. Here’s what I’ve changed:

  1. Topic-Driven Content: “Struggling to Find Job Applicants? Here’s Why Your Website Matters”. I’ll rank slower, but better. Google will start seeing me as an authority in a subject, not a zip code.
  2. Schema Markup: Using Organization Schema instead of Local Business. This tells Google I’m not tied to a single location.
  3. Internal Linking: Structured the site around core services. Link blog posts to service pages. Use anchor text that reflects a national scope.
  4. Long-Tail Keywords: Target phrases like: “Custom websites for nonprofits”. These are less competitive but more relevant to the leads I want.
  5. Social SEO: Freshened up my social profiles and created content around what I do.

How to Handle Reviews Without Google Business

Losing Google Reviews is painful, but not fatal. Here are the alternatives I’ve adopted or are in the process of implementing:

  1. LinkedIn Recommendations: They carry real weight, especially when potential clients look at your profile before reaching out. They’re public, personal, and detailed.
  2. On-Site Testimonials: Collect reviews and publish them on your own site. Include names, company names, and project details when possible.
  3. Case Studies: Ask if you can write a mini case study. Focus on before/after outcomes and include a quote.
  4. Facebook Recommendations: These show up in search results and can be shared across Facebook, making them both visible and viral.

Deleting your Google Business profile can feel like a setback. But if you’re in a suburb, serving national clients, and trying to grow beyond your zip code, it might be the most freeing decision you make. Your future clients aren’t searching for you by town. They’re searching by problem. Rebuild your strategy to focus on solving problems, not showing up on a map. Use content, referrals, thought leadership, and trust-building  to create visibility that reflects who you really serve, not just where you sleep.
